ANGLERS have continued to enjoy good sport from the region's lakes with warm, humid conditions keeping fish feeding, except when the sun shone brightly for lengthy periods.

A midweek match on the Inner Snake lake at Witherington Farm Fishery was won by Martin Rogers with a hefty bag of 142lb 14oz.

John Dewberry was second with 70lb 8oz and Gary Etheridge was third with 61lb. Several double-figure carp have been caught from Barnmoor Lake with the best at 24lb.

Double figure carp, including a ghost carp of 13lb, were caught from Bishops Lake at Waldens Farm Fishery which also produced roach to 1lb, bream and skimmers. Abbots Lake is also producing carp into double figures plus some tench, with Monks, Popes and the Match Lake fishing well for tench, bream, smaller carp and plenty of roach and rudd.

Salisbury Angling Club's match on their Nightingale Lake at Wellow on Sunday, was won by Mick Keynes with 34lb 12oz of carp and small tench, Ian Heydon was runner-up with 26lb 4oz and Lee Goodfellow was third with 22lb 2oz.

The club has received some good news following dozens of fish deaths at its Steeple Langford lakes complex earlier this year.

The last dead fish found was on May 15 and since then the Environment Agency has compiled a detailed report for the club on its investigation into the disaster. The report indicates that the deaths were caused by a toxic and irritating natural algae bloom which affected the fish's gills. The toxic bloom was caused by high nutrient levels and weather conditions and was a natural occurrence.

Water testing will continue but this week the club said that it will be controlling the level of bait going into the lakes, such as groundbait, and is banning carp nets and keep nets for the foreseeable future. Further checks will continue but it is hoped that, providing no further problems arise, the lakes will reopen on Friday, July 1.

Rod and Line is taking a break for a few weeks and will return in August.
