A DRIZZLY and muggy Sunday didn't dampen their spirits of 3,500 racegoers who filed through the gates for Salisbury Racecourse's family raceday.

The action started with a bang as the odds-on Red Cardinal made short work of the opening Blind and Track Services handicap, scoring by six lengths.

Despite the impressive winner, many plaudits also went to the runner-up, Faithful Mount, who was subject of an extraordinary ride by Pat Dobbs who was unable to use his irons after the leather broke three furlongs into the race and still managed to grab a place.

Andrea Atzeni jumped to the top of the Salisbury jockey standings in the following Manor Farm Butchers handicap as he struck a fine tune out of the Charles Hills-trained A Momentofmadness. Atzeni's isolation at the top of Salisbury's jockey standings lasted for 90 minutes before David Probert joined him at the top of the leader board following victory in the Toby Balding Memorial Novice Stakes.

Probert's mount, Farleigh Mac, raced prominently throughout and had just enough left in the tank to cling on from the fast finishing Salouen to record a poignant victory; Farleigh Mac is trained by Toby Balding's nephew, Andrew.

Stars N Angels was another winning favourite at Salisbury, taking out the Ron Durrant 80th Birthday Celebration Fillies' handicap for Oisin Murphy and Mick Appleby while the well-fancied Malmoosa was a late non-runner in the earlier Wateraid Mildren Construction Maiden which paved the way for 14/1 outsider Playful Sound to win.

Apprentice Lulu Stanford capped a week to remember with her second winner of the week at Salisbury in the closing Littleton Stud Racing Excellence Apprentice handicap on Elegant Annie.

The Listed feature, the British Stallion Studs EBF Cathedral stakes, was described as "the best renewal in the races history" by Clerk of the course Jeremy Martin, with 7/2 Don't Touch getting the better of Frankie Dettori-ridden Danzeno, who finished second.

Salisbury's next meeting is on Wednesday, June 22.
