UP at dawn or fish until dusk is the order of the day at the moment if you want the greatest chance of catching fish from local rivers.

Anglers fishing the London AA fishery at Britford have found that very early or late is when the fish are feeding. During the day it is hard going with the rivers fairly low and very clear. Charlie Kemmet has got his first decent-sized roach of the season when he fished the main carrier just after dawn and landed a 2lb specimen and two more of 1lb 10oz and 1lb 8oz, all on the pole and on caster.

Some chub are being caught from both the carrier and the old river during the evenings. There are plenty of pike about and they can prove troublesome if they move into your swim, unless they are your quarry.

Salisbury Angling Club look set to have a new tench record if a lovely 7lb 12oz fish landed from club's Steeple Langford lake is verified. The current record stands at 7lb 9oz and was set in the 2007/8 season. It is good news for the Steeple Langford lakes which suffered algae bloom problems and fish deaths earlier in the year.

The club's match anglers visited Test Valley AC's King's Lake on Sunday and came home winners of the inter-club competition. First place went to Paul Barnard with 69lb 7oz, mainly carp, Dave Docherty was second with 49lb 12oz and Test Valley's Graham Chapman finished third with 48lb 2oz.

Two hefty carp have been landed from lakes in the Ringwood area – one weighing 35lb from Spinnaker Lake and the other 28lb from Hucklesbrook Lake. On the rivers, Manor Farm is producing chub to 6lb and some roach between 1lb and 2lb to caster.

Reports from lake owners in the Salisbury area – and those belonging to Salisbury AC – all indicate good fishing is to be had although during the brighter days, early mornings and evenings are best.
