LAKE fishing remains the best bet if you want to catch a few fish as the River Avon and its tributaries remain low and clear, making fish nervous and reluctant to feed.

Lakes throughout the region are fishing well with plenty of double-figure carp, good bags of tench, bream, and roach and rudd to around the 1lb mark.

At Witherington Farm Fishery the Inner Snake lake provided a midweek match winning weight of 104lb and on Sunday, despite the wind and previous day's rain, plenty of fish for members of Salisbury Angling Club, fishing in a club match.

Mick Keynes won the match with 71lb 10oz, Ian Heydon was second with 65lb 4oz and Paul Barnard came third with 45lb 10oz.

The fishery's Barnmoor Lake has produced double-figure carp on many days and on Friday one angler had 11 carp in an evening session, many of them doubles.

Salisbury Angling Club's Nightingale Lake, at Wellow, is fishing well for tench up to 3lb and mirror carp just under double figures – bags of 20lb to 30lb a sitting can be expected. Reports from Waldens Farm Fishery, Dandy's Ford Lane Fishery at Wellow and Bulford's Watergate Farm Fishery, are all positive with plenty of fish being caught.

However, it is a different story on the rivers. At London AA's Britford fishery the going is hard, says water-keeper and bailiff, Stuart Wilson. Some dace and grayling are being caught in the early mornings and during the evenings, but chub, roach and barbel are all seeking cover as the river is low and clear and the slightest movement, sends them out of sight.

TWO alien creatures have been spotted by Wilson on the fishery – terrapins! One was seen a few weeks ago, but this week two were seen sunbathing on a log by the bank side.
