AN avid runner from Salisbury paid tribute to his uncle and former footballer David Syrett at the New Forest Half Marathon.

Lee Syrett tackled the 13-mile race on Sunday in memory of the ex-Salisbury City striker, who died of a brain tumour two months ago, aged 60.

The City of Salisbury runner crossed the line in one hour, 30 minutes and 47 seconds, coming 65th.

So far, his efforts have seen him raise £1,038 for Brain Tumour Research.

David’s daughter Kerry Syrett, who watched cousin Lee finish the race, said: “Following the recent death of my dearest dad after a courageous battle with an aggressive brain tumour, Lee felt compelled to use his talent for running to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity, which is so desperately needed.”

“To witness him cross the line with an image of my dad on his vest was a truly emotional and incredibly special moment for me – one I will never forget. My family and I are so hugely proud of Lee and I know Dad would have been too.

“Lee is still receiving donations and hopes to continue to raise awareness and money to invest further into Brain Tumour Research.”

“We would like to extend our most heartfelt thanks to everyone for their generosity and support.”

Salisbury-born David, who also played for Swindon Town, Mansfield Town, Walsall, Peterborough United and Northampton Town, was head groundsman of Chafyn Grove School.
