AN FA Cup winner has been added to the star-studded guest list for the return of the Journal Sports Awards.

Nick Holmes, who won the competition with Southampton in 1976 after a famous 1-0 win over Manchester United, will be in attendance at the event tomorrow night (7pm), which is back after a decade.

The venue is a luxury marquee at the Ray Mac – the place where Holmes spent seven years managing Salisbury City where he notched double promotions.

Holmes will be joined by Olympic diver Peter Waterfield, England netball star Mia Ritchie and England lacrosse international Ruby Smith.

And champion 400 metre runner, Iwan Thomas, is the host for the night.

The Welshman will be recognising sporting heroes as well as entertaining a packed audience at Old Sarum.

The three shortlisted finalists for each award are:

Senior Team of the Year: Amesbury Town, South Wilts Cricket Club and Salisbury RFC.

Community Club of the Year: South Wilts Cricket Club, City of Salisbury Athletics and Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

Disability Sports Personality of the Year: Warren Clark.

Outstanding Service to Sport in South Wiltshire: Nell Walker, Chris Garvey and Dave Amey.

Outstanding Progression in a Sport: Brodie Trayhorn, Liam Thornhill and Jaymee Domoney.

Football Player of the Year: Charlie Aldridge, Shaun Prentice and Eddie Perrett.

Rugby Player of the Year: Cadan Murley, Rob Larcombe and Richard West.

Coach of the Year: Lee Duckett, Dave Amey and Karen Musselwhite.

Country Sports: Lucy Butt, Ian Pierce and Roger Hunt.

Cricket Player of the Year: Will Wade, Rich Cridge and James Hayward.

Hockey Player of the Year: Nick Easterbrook, Alana Mercer and Miranda MacTaggart.

Athlete and Swimmer of the Year: Aaron Wilson, Jaymee Domoney and Natalie Thomas.

Some of the chosen athletes will be nominated for Sports Personality, Male Sports Personality and Female Sports Personality.

Journal editor and publisher Bill Browne said: “It’s going to be a privilege to be in the company of so many local sporting heroes on Friday evening.

“I thoroughly enjoy reading about their achievements week-after-week in the Journal and on our website, but the Sports Awards is a way of officially recognising them.”

A two-course gourmet meal is on the menu at the event, which is a black tie affair.

Tickets, costing £40, have nearly sold out, with only a few tables of eight and ten remaining.

“The ticket hotline has been busy as this is a sporting night not to be missed,” added Mr Browne.
