Paul’s late catch can’t stop Trevett’s charge

A LAST-MINUTE carp, caught in the dying moments of a Salisbury Angling Club match on Sunday, boosted Paul Hough’s catch from seven ounces to more than eleven pounds, giving him the runner up spot in the annual Stuart Casey Cup competition.

The match was fished on the club’s Petersfinger Lakes and was won by Steve Trevett with a nice 16lb 12oz bag made up of roach and rudd.

Despite the mild weather, tench were few and far between, surprisingly, as the lakes are a renowned tench fishery.

Other lakes in the region are fishing well. At Waldens Farm Fishery, ghost carp to more than 15lb have been caught from Bishops Lake and Abbots Lake and one angler fishing Bishops, bagged up with roach and bream netting a bag of 68lb, two of the bream topping 5lb. He was float fishing with meat and corn over pellet loosefeed.

Decent tench and bream are also being caught from Abbots Lake while Monks Lake is producing good bags of carp, tench and roach, the field bags particularly good for bream and carp. Shannon Rose caught a crucian of 1lb 8oz and fishery bailiff, Stuart Greer, took bream to 4lb using a feeder and single red maggot.

Plenty of fish from both Popes Lakes and Deacons Lake with roach, rudd, bream and tench among the bags.

Top lakes for big carp have been Tompkins and Spinaker lakes near Ringwood, with Tompkins’ big carp, which is caught several times a year, coming out this week at 41lb. Best carp from Spinaker weighed 30lb.

The Avon is producing quality barbel with one of 15lb 2oz from below the suspension bridge at Burgate, another of 14lb 11oz from Bisterne and a 13lb 9oz from Gorley Corner. A bream of 9lb was also caught from the Ibsley stretch. Anglers are also catching chub and the occasional roach.

The British Carp angling championships are taking place tomorrow until Sunday at the Broadland Lakes at Hill Street in Calmore. The country’s top anglers will be battling it out in front of television cameras and visitors are welcome to attend to see the action.

The 48-hour match starts at noon on Friday and runs through to noon on Sunday.

Peter and Debbie Beale are hosting a social evening tonight to get the championships under way.

n THE Environment Agency is set to stop the annual weed cutting programme on the Hampshire Avon.

Leaflets have been circulating at various angling shops informing anglers that weed cutting has stopped for this year and will not be carried out next year or thereafter. The idea behind abandoning the weed cut is to give fry more chance of survival by leaving the weed in situ, offering them better protection as they begin to grow after spring spawning.
