THE Rugby World Cup 2015 is special to the community at Salisbury RFC in more ways than one.

The Green and Whites, of South West 1 (East), boast two youth team players who are bidding for trophy recognition when the premium competition springs into action tomorrow.

The proteges include recently-turned 30 Mike Brown, who is representing the home nation and Canada’s Matt Evans, both of whom are full-backs.

Taught at Wyvern College, Laverstock, Brown joined Salisbury’s youth academy at eight years old in the under-8s in the early 90s and in 2002, he was invited to join Harlequins, where he now plays for the first team.

Brown’s England open the tournament at Twickenham with Fiji in Group A before playing Australia, Wales and Uruguay.

Salisbury-born Evans, 27, also part of the junior section at Castle Road, is representing Canada in Group D where they face France, Ireland, Italy and Romania.

Evans is a household name at Salisbury as his father, Chris, was the city captain in the 80s.

Salisbury have a 2003 England world cup winner in Richard Hill, who was at the club since six years of age.

All 48 games will be televised in the clubhouse bars.

New chairman Richard Larcombe, who replaces now-president Simon Hedges, is wishing the duo the very best.

“It will be busy, with four senior teams, colts, juniors and minis all playing grassroots rugby here with the small matter of the Rugby World Cup going on around us.”

“We have two former Salisbury junior players playing in the competition, Mike Brown for England and Matt Evans for Canada, and I am sure we all hope they both have an enjoyable and successful competition.”

“We look forward to the Ruby World Cup and to see our clubhouse full of members and guests enjoying beer, food, friendships and northern hemisphere success.”

On Tuesday the club hosted 20 primary schools from across the area representing each country in a mini-world cup festival.

As well as the four senior teams, the club has a thriving youth section, which is always looking for new players, aged six years upwards.

They train on Sundays from 10am. Seniors train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm.

Anyone interested in should contact chairman of selectors Barry White on 07768 894183.

THE club provides training facilities for Dorset and Wilts who use the floodlight system at Castle Road.
