A LAST gasp Jamie Miller try saw Salisbury RFC overcome previously undefeated Newbury Blues 23-20 following a pulsating game at Castle Road.

It was a match which had four second half lead changes but Salisbury had much of the early ascendency after sprinting into a 15-0 lead.

Two tries, the first by Tom Lane from an excellent inside out pass from Charlie Jennings, the second a very similar move from Jennings allowing Josh Green to go over.

The Blues remained dangerous and exerted pressure through the back line, including former full-back Andy Herriot, back at Castle Road following his close season move to Newbury.

Just before half time Newbury struck, breaking through a wanting Salisbury defence to score close to the post which they were able to convert.

What followed was an ugly incident, which involved two sin-binned players getting involved in a pitchside altercation resulting in both teams being reduced to to 14-men for the second half.

Early in the second period the Green and Whites defence was again breached with another converted try followed closely by a drop goal which gave the Blues a deserved two point lead.

The teams then traded penalties which set-up the grandstand finish. A desperate attack into the Newbury 22 which saw nearly all the players involved in the build-up.

With the ball moving from one side of the pitch to the other, Jamie Miller powered through the line using all his upper body strength, somehow scoring near to the post to give Salisbury a 23-20 win.

n The second team were at Blandford and lost 22-17 but put in a much improved performance from previous outing against Bournemouth. Dom Porter and Jack Gurney both got on the scoresheet.
