BULLISH Salisbury RFC knocked Swindon off the top of South West 1 (East) with a potent 19-7 win.

Green and Whites stunned the previous table-toppers as they ploughed through the teaming rain on Saturday to secure back-to-back victories.

The game swung back and forward with mistakes from both sides apparent in the drizzle until Dave Tonge spotted a gap at a ruck and sprinted clear. He sent winger Tom Pottage on his way who, in turn, found Ollie Bowden in support to finish off the move. Tom Lane added the conversion for a 7-0 advantage.

The rest of the half followed the same pattern but Tom Ronaboldo stood out, making good ground with every carry of the ball, and Lane took full advantage of the penalties conceded by the home side, adding two more, the second from the ten metre line.

Swindon started the second period brighter and scored a try in the corner, adding the conversion points. Salisbury came back and Lane notched up another penalty before they spent a period camped in the home 22 metre area.

Another chance went astray when another lightning break from Tonge saw him split the defence before kicking ahead for Theo Daniel to chase but the defence won the race for the ball.

Another penalty from Lane closed the game out at 19-7.

Coach Dan Jeffries said: "It was a controlled performance. We squeezed them and really put their front five under pressure, allowing our backs to play."

Salisbury don't play again until November 7, at home to Trowbridge.

Elsewhere, Salisbury again succeeded in fielding four sides, which means that in excess of 70 players are currently wearing the green and white shirts on a Saturday afternoon. But the thirds lost 25-0 and fourths went down 32-0.
