FOCUSED Dan Jeffries believes Salisbury RFC have enough firepower to protect top spot in their quest for promotion to National League 3 South.

The head coach’s charges wrapped up a convincing win over Grove coupled with Towcestrians’ slip-up at Newbury Blues which saw them rise to the South West 1 (East) summit on Saturday night.

That was their sixth win on the trot as they approach the midway mark in what has been a remarkable season so far since returning to the division.

Jeffries told JournalSport: “I couldn’t be happier with the boys. Last season was very much about building the squad, as the talent is evident and I knew we could compete this year.

“It is a very long season and we are still on a huge learning curve but we have the ability to beat any team in this league as we have shown. However, it is a very long season and we will take each week as it comes.”

Green and Whites have two home games against Windsor and Leighton Buzzard then travel to Witney before breaking up for two weeks over Christmas.

Wins in those three encounters would guarantee Salisbury being top come midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Jeffries added: “The Christmas break falls at a very awkward time and means we will struggle to get together as often as we like. However, the boys will keep themselves in shape and I’m sure a rest will help them through the long season.”

“We need to control our play and keep our discipline to execute our game plan.

“Jamie Miller returns for us on Saturday and, as always, is a huge boost to us and a dangerous ball carrier.”

As it stands, Salisbury, who have lost just one of their 10 matches, have 39 points, ahead of Towcestrians with 37, Newbury Blues 31and Buzzard 30.
