A PROFESSIONAL team effort from Salisbury RFC ensured they retained their two-point gap at the top of South West 1 (East) with a seventh sweet win on the spin.

Green and Whites made light work of dispatching Windsor, posting a 25-13 victory and collecting a crucial bonus point thanks to Tom Pottage's last-gasp try.

The win has kept pressure on fellow title-chasers Towcestrians, who were comprehensive victors at home to Swindon.

The Castle Road outfit's early enterprise was rewarded when a driving maul finished with Gareth Blackborrow at the bottom of a pile of bodies but over the line. Tom Lane kicked the conversion from wide out despite the conditions.

Pottage chipped ahead and Josh Green gathered and made ground before offloading to Rob Larcombe who dived over in the corner despite the despairing tackle of the Windsor cover. Lane was unlucky with the conversion attempt but stroked a penalty over to stretch the lead to 15 points.

Jamie Miller then made a sharp break and released Pottage to go in for another score while Windsor could only manage a solitary try in return as the half ended at 20-5 to the hosts.

The visitors launched relentless attacks and a penalty and a try saw them claw the margin back to seven points. Salisbury’s kicking was ineffective, despite the gale, and they were struggling to play in opposition territory.

But good teamplay from Dave Tonge, Lane, Larcombe and Christian Metson sent Pottage flying in for the bonus try to ease any concerns.

Head coach Dan Jeffries said: "We lost a bit of focus in the second half and began to spill the ball too easily and not control territory at all.

"However, our defence remained sold throughout and we found ourselves in a scenario which was to score a try for the bonus point in the remaining two minutes."

"From this point our professionalism took over and we executed the game plan to perfection, leading to Tom Pottage crossing the line with the last play of the game. It's moment like that, which makes the painstaking preparation we undertake for perfection on the training field worthwhile."
