A PLACE in the play-offs is all but guaranteed for Salisbury RFC.

Dan Jeffries' men are just one win away from sealing second spot which would see them battle in a one-off game for promotion to National League 3 South West.

They racked up their seventh straight win on Saturday over Leighton Buzzard 34-8 in South West 1 (East).

The win momentarily put them top of the table as Towcestrians' clash with Trowbridge was abandoned due to a serious injury sustained by Trowbridge youngster Gareth Davis.

Green and Whites, who were playing into a fierce wind but down the fearsome Buzzard slope, took an early lead when an exquisite chip through from Charlie Jennings was touched down by the chasing Christian Metson, Tom Lane adding the extras.

Lock forward Rob Best then went on the rampage and was only denied a score by the combined efforts of four Buzzard tacklers, from the ruck Dave Tonge found Josh Green who fed Luke Esnouf who crashed over for a further score.

This should have been the point when Salisbury consolidated their position but the home side came back at them, and scored a penalty. This pattern continued into the second half with Buzzard scoring a try almost immediately from the restart.

Salisbury now began to get a foothold in the game and, following a good passage of play, a catch and drive at a lineout saw Tom Ranaboldo drive over for a try, again converted by Lane. The visitors were now very much back in the game and a Lane penalty preceded a period of pressure, and following a series of drives at the line were thwarted by the home defence, the referee signalled for a penalty try, which was converted by Lane. The city side were in the ascendancy, with veteran prop Richard West very much to the fore, and following another lineout, Ranaboldo broke from the back of the maul to flop over for the final score.

Salisbury host fourth-placed Witney on Saturday.
