SALISBURY RFC tumbled to a first home defeat in almost two years when Brixham were the visitors in National 3 South West on Saturday.

The Devon outfit inflicted a 26-21 defeat on Green and Whites, who last lost at Castle Road when Sherborne visited on October 18 2014.

Neil Loader’s charges faced an uphill struggle within five minutes.

They went 11-0 down before the Fishermen extended their lead to 14 points following a penalty.

Tom Lane was then on target to narrow the deficit.

Fly half Matt Loader cut an exquisite line to diver over and then a Rob Best drive saw Lane add a penalty.

Some wonderful handling, involving James Kaminski and Jack Grey, saw Jon Goldsmith under the posts, Lane adding the conversion for a 21-16 point lead. Brixham were not going to roll over and scored a well worked try of their own to level at half time.

The second half was unable to match the preceding period and the game swung one way then another but the Fishermen were the only side to muster a score and a victory on the road.

Home skipper Josh Green said: “That was tough to take, our first home defeat in two years. “We gave ourselves too much to do in the first ten minutes and, despite coming back, our execution was not good enough in their 22. “There are positives, we were not disheartened when behind and came back strongly.”

On Saturday, they travel to leaders Camborne, who have a 100 per cent win record.
