England call up for Tom (Junior rugby round-up)
SALISBURY Rugby Club is celebrating yet more recognition for its talented youngsters after Tom Heathcote was selected for the full England under 16s squad, which will travel to Lyon to play Four Nations internationals against Wales, Italy and France next month.
Heathcote was one of 60 players put through their paces in a series of practise matches played in front of England selectors.
Meanwhile Salisbury Colts were in action on Saturday, travelling to Chippenham for one of their toughest tests of the season.
The hosts had the edge when it came to pure pace.
So Salisbury opted to cramp their style and keep it tight, preventing the ball being shipped wide to the hosts' speedy wingers.
Salisbury took on the larger Chippenham pack with gusto, the effort led by prop Luke Byrne.
They dominated the first 20 minutes but were unable to break down the strong home defence and see any reward for their efforts.
Chippenham made the breakthrough, taking a quick tapped penalty and catching the visitors unawares before scoring and adding the conversion points.
Salisbury's forwards rallied round and a huge effort resulted in a try for Mike Patterson, which went unconverted.
The second half followed the same pattern with a massive forward effort from the Salisbury pack both in the tight and in the loose.
Fittingly, it was Byrne who crashed over the line for what proved to be the decisive score.
It ended Chippenham 7 Salisbury 10 - a deserved result following a highly competitive encounter with a strong side.
