SCORES of primary schoolchildren are Going for Goals in a football tournament organised by Wiltshire Council in conjunction with Chelsea FC Foundation.
Five hundred pupils from years 5 and 6 are competing in matches at leisure centres across Wiltshire, with the winners from each location going forward to a finals day at Chelsea’s training ground in Cobham, Surrey on March 16. Teams receive coaching from the Chelsea FC Foundation and Wiltshire Council coaches.
Participating venues are Springfield Community Campus, Five Rivers Leisure Centre in Salisbury and Amesbury, Westbury, Durrington, Tisbury and Pewsey leisure centres. The tournaments will be held through February and March.
Jonathon Seed, cabinet member for leisure, said: “I met some of the young people and coaches participating in the first tournament and it’s plain to see the excitement and enthusiasm on their faces as they take part.
“Hosting such events helps create an enthusiasm for sport in young people, which we hope will continue into a lifelong enjoyment.”
