MORE than a hundred teams lined up last weekend to take part in the largest youth six-a-side football tournament in Wiltshire.

The South Newton and Wishford FC Father’s Day Football Festival saw 115 teams ranging from under eight to 15 battle it our for silverware in the South Wiltshire sunshine.

Local teams pitted their skill against opponents from the South West and victors included FC Salisbury United in the Under 9’s and Sarum Youth FC who beat Salisbury City 1-0 in a thrilling Under 12 final.

For the third year, South Newton & Wishford FC continued their support for the growth in girl’s football by including a standalone girls’ competition within the festival.

After thrilling semi-finals, both decided on penalties, Sarum Youth FC were pipped to the title by Forest Green Rovers, who travelled from Gloucestershire.

Mike Plowman, chairman of South Newton & Wishford FC said: “We are very proud of the tournament we host here each year.

“The feedback we receive from both players and managers is universally positive and we would like to thank everyone involved in making this event so enjoyable for all of the boys and girls who competed.

“The football was of a very high standard this year and it was great to see local sides competing with the best in the region.

“The proceeds of the tournament will be contributing to our campaign to raise £250,000 to build modern changing room facilities for the club and local community and we would welcome anyone who can help us in raising our target.”
