THE championship title is in sight for Salisbury Sparks Under-16s after two crucial wins.

They scored the same amount of points - 42 - against Tres Barilles and Weymouth, respectively.

In their first game, guided by stand-in coach Iestyn Williams, they were trailing by 14 points at the end of the first quarter.

But the second half was a different story as a flurry of baskets from top scorer, Gavin Martin, managed to draw Salisbury level. The closing minutes were tense with both teams trading points at either ends, yet the Sparks came out on top 44-42 in what was a tantalisingly close finish.

The following opposition, Weymouth, saw the Sparks jump into an eight-point lead at the end of the first half.

Yet, the third quarter was the highlight of the day as a total shutout on the defensive end meant Weymouth players were unable to find an answer to Salisbury’s two to three zone.

And a ten-point increase in offence saw the Sparks close the game out with a comfortable 42-22 victory.
