David Bowie's surprise new single charted at number six
David Bowie's surprise comeback track made it to number six in the UK singles chart, despite fears it could miss out completely.
The song, Where Are We Now?, created a buzz around the world on Tuesday when it appeared without warning, and soon topped the download charts on iTunes.
The Official Charts Company had warned that sales of the song would not count towards this week's top 40 because many were tied to orders for his new album.
But they were eventually able to break the sales down further, allowing it to reach sixth place.
Will.i.am secured his second UK number one single as a lead artist as Scream and Shout - featuring Britney Spears - climbed from number two.
Taylor Swift's track I Knew You Were Trouble moved up three places to two, while last week's chart-topper James Arthur fell to third with Impossible.
Scottish DJ Calvin Harris's release Drinking From The Bottle leapt from 15 to five.
But Calvin missed out on a double success after dropping to number two in the albums chart.
Emeli Sande's debut Our Version Of Events returned to the top, while singer songwriter Jake Bugg took third position with his self-titled album.
Rihanna's Unapologetic dropped to four, while music from the film Les Miserables entered at number five.
