Leonardo DiCaprio said he believes films are an art form
Leonardo DiCaprio has said filming violent scenes like those featured in Django Unchained does not deter him from wanting his movies to be great art.
Quentin Tarantino's bloody revenge film examining slavery before the US Civil War has fuelled debate about whether Hollywood shows too much on-screen violence.
Leo - who portrays Calvin Candie, a ruthless plantation owner - said: "My philosophy has kind of always been the same: Pain is temporary, film is forever.
"You do everything you possibly can, you give it your all, all of your focus, and hopefully you come out with, if all the elements mixed together correctly ... a great piece of art.
"To me, cinema is the great modern art form."
The film won two Academy Awards last month - best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz, and original screenplay for Tarantino.
Leo was speaking in South Korea, where he attended a news conference and the film's red carpet premiere. Mobbed by fans snapping pictures of him on their phones, the star said it was an incredible welcome for his first trip to South Korea, and he was sure to return.
