Garfield wants Spider-Man to be gay

Salisbury Journal: Andrew Garfield thinks Peter Parker should explore his sexuality Andrew Garfield thinks Peter Parker should explore his sexuality

Andrew Garfield has revealed he would like to play Spider-Man as a gay character.

The Social Network star plays Peter Parker in Marc Webb's franchise reboot of the comic hero, The Amazing Spider-Man.

Andrew told Entertainment Weekly he has had discussions with producer Matt Tolmach about whether Peter's main love interest "MJ", short for Mary Jane in the comic books, could stand for a boy's name.

"I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ," he said. "And I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can't we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It's hardly even groundbreaking!... So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"

Andrew - whose real life girlfriend Emma Stone plays Peter's highschool sweetheart Gwen Stacy in the films - revealed he even has an actor in mind to play a male MJ.

He said: "I've been obsessed with Michael B Jordan since The Wire. He's so charismatic and talented. It'd be even better - we'd have interracial bisexuality!"

Asked by Entertainment Weekly director Marc revealed he had heard a lot about Andrew's idea.

Michael B Jordan appeared in cult TV show The Wire as a teenager caught up in a drugs gang.

Shailene Woodley was signed up to play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but it was recently revealed she will not be appearing in the sequel, as it was reported director Marc had decided not to introduce Mary Jane until the third instalment.
