Ty Burrell has said his new animated movie Mr Peabody And Sherman is for grown-ups first, and children second.

The Modern Family star insisted the film, about a time-travelling dog and his adopted boy Sherman, can be enjoyed by all ages, because writer Jay Ward wrote it to entertain an adult audience.

Ty, who voices dog Mr Peabody, said: "Jay Ward, one of his big things was to make them for adults actually, and in involving the time travel and stuff of course have a kids' audience, but he really wanted to impress the adults.

"And I think that's been one of the coolest things of this latest wave of animated films. I'm just a big fan of them, from before I had kids, I just think they're so smart and the worlds are so big."

The actor admitted making the movie was very different to the set of hit comedy Modern Family, and he did miss his co-stars sitting alone in a recording booth day after day.

Ty said: "The creation of Peabody and Sherman is alone in a booth so it really is about if you feel like you did it enough ways and gave them enough variety, that felt like the best day.

"And on the show the best days are when we're all just laughing all day, which we do pretty much every day."

Mr Peabody And Sherman opens in cinemas on Friday February 7.
