Clooney flew script to Blanchett

Salisbury Journal: George Clooney got together an A-list cast for The Monuments Men George Clooney got together an A-list cast for The Monuments Men

George Clooney has revealed he flew all the way to Australia for a day to hand deliver The Monuments Men script to Cate Blanchett.

The award-winning actor both stars in and directs the World War II drama, and assembled a cast including Hollywood friends like Cate and Matt Damon.

Talking about getting stars on board, he said: "Well, they are friends so that part is easy. But you know the truth is, they wouldn't do it if they didn't like the screenplay...

"I mean I flew to Australia for one day to hand Cate the script."

The Monuments Men - adapted from a book by Robert Edsel - is based on the true story of an Allied platoon whose mission was to rescue artworks from the Nazis.

It also stars John Goodman and Bill Murray, who was happy to work on a big film again.

He said: "Yeah, I got teased for a while (by George). He told me the whole story and then he would say, 'Can you please pass the salad?' Then like nine months later through a friend, he said, 'Ask Bill if he wants to be in the job'."

The movie was due to be released in late 2013 but was pushed back to early 2014 and right out of Hollywood's prestigious awards season.

"We just didn't finish it," George explained. "We had a lot of work to do. It's a bigger film. You know, we started shooting this movie in March of last year, so we were going to have to flip it around in nine months, which is really moving for a film that size, and we just didn't make it."
