Watson plays safe at Noah premiere

Emma Watson was the belle of the ball as she arrived at the New York premiere of Noah in a sweeping black gown.

The 23-year-old, known for her edgy red carpet choices, picked an Oscar de la Renta satin dress for the red carpet, with a low back, before changing to an Erdem floral number for the after-party.

The former Harry Potter star, who plays Noah's daughter-in-law Ila in Darren Aronofsky's Biblical drama, shared her preparation on social networking site Twitter, taking over MTV's account.

"I did NOT wake up like this," she wrote, followed by photos of her vast array of make-up and her satin Christian Louboutin heels.

She later wrote: "Off to the after-party in my @ErdemRTW to celebrate!"

Russell Crowe, who plays Noah, gave his screen wife Jennifer Connelly a peck in front of photographers. The actress, who portrays Noah's wife Naameh, wore a fitted black leather jacket, brightly coloured brocade skirt and red patent-leather ankle boots, all by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton.

Logan Lerman and Douglas Booth also attended the premiere, which took place at the Ziegfeld Theatre.

Earlier, Russell defended the film from criticism during an appearance on Good Morning America.

"We've had probably over a year now of very harsh criticism from a bunch of people who have put their name and stamp on an opinion that's not even based on the movie or seeing the movie, just an assumption of what it could be or how bad it could be or how wrong it could be in their eyes, which I think quite frankly is bordering on absolute stupidity, because now, I think, people are seeing the movie and they're realising how respectful it is and how potent it is," he said.

Noah will be released in UK cinemas on April 4.
