Collabro, Darcy's fight to impress

Salisbury Journal: Darcy Oake says he had been agonising over his Britain's Got Talent semi-final act for a long time Darcy Oake says he had been agonising over his Britain's Got Talent semi-final act for a long time

Britain's Got Talent's first finalists Collabro and Darcy Oake have explained how they have had to work hard to impress the judges.

Operatic boyband Collabro went through on the public vote from the first live semi-final with their performance of Bring Him Home, while Canadian magician Darcy wowed the crowd with a trick that saw him disappear from part of the stage, only to reappear somewhere else.

Darcy split the panel for the judges' choice with impressionist Jon Clegg but saw his way through on public votes.

He said: "It was so overwhelming because we spent literally from the first audition until now working that out and hoping it was the right choice.

"First round was sleight of hand manipulation, where I jammed a million things into two minutes, whereas this one was just one thing in two minutes. I was like, 'Is this the right thing to do, shall I go with the format from the initial audition?'"

He added: "But the issue was most magicians who go on these shows [pack everything they can] in two minutes and you're [exhausted] by the end of it, whereas I think it's important to show diversity and different aspects of the art, so that was my strategy."

Collabro's Jamie explained there had been some stiff competition on the night: "A couple of people there last night said it was one of the highest standards of semi-final they'd seen and these are people who've worked there for eight years, so it was really cool to hear that."

Asked who their toughest competition was, Jamie answered: "Bars And Melody - they're really likeable, they've got a good message, they're nice kids, I think they're probably [our biggest competition]."

The TV talent show's live semi-finals continue tonight on ITV.
