Downey Jr: Addiction is genetic

Salisbury Journal: Robert Downey Jr's son Indio has been arrested on suspicion of drug possession Robert Downey Jr's son Indio has been arrested on suspicion of drug possession

Robert Downey Jr has said his son Indio may have inherited his drug addiction, and pledged to help him overcome his issues.

The Iron Man star's 20-year-old son Indio Falconer Downey has been released on bail following his arrest on suspicion of cocaine possession.

Robert said: "Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it.

"Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we're all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being. We're grateful to the Sheriff's department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale."

The 49-year-old actor's own battle with drug use in the 90s was well documented, landing him in prison and rehab and cost him acting roles. He has been clean since 2003 and is now one of the industry's most bankable stars after appearing in Marvel's Iron Man trilogy and The Avengers.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's department said Indio was arrested after a car he was in was pulled over in West Hollywood.

He was booked on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, believed to be cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Two other people were in the car but only Indio was arrested.

He was released shortly after bail was posted at 10,250 US dollars (£6,010). A court date is set for August 29.

Indio appeared in the 2005 movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which starred his father.
