Chris Packham has revealed his ambition to get more girls involved with wildlife through his new show, Wildlife Jack.

The Disney Junior show, narrated by the Springwatch presenter and featuring footage of British wildlife, is seen through the eyes of six-year-old animated adventurer Jack, who lives in the middle of the city.

"We can't be sexist about Wildlife Jacks, we need Wildlife Jills too. When they're very young, biology is a boy's thing and I think traditionally, it's because it was hands on," he explained.

"It was muddy ponds, overflowing Wellingtons, scratches from brambles. My sister's last full-on interaction with wildlife was when she was 13 and I dragged her through a very deep nettle bed to show her a duck's nest. I'd like more young girls out there Wildlife Jackie-ing it."

Chris also revealed how there should be more nature programmes to get children interested in wildlife.

"I'm really keen to get as many young people interested in wildlife as possible. The younger the age, the better," he said.

"There's a real gap in the market for shows like these and I like Wildlife Jack because it's about a young person engaging with British wildlife - the wildlife that's in back gardens or over the fence of the viewers.

"I also like the fact that Jack has an adventure and that it's factually accurate. It's in a diversity of environments, it paints a nice picture and portfolio of the habitats we have in the UK."

The 53-year-old is hoping the show, which airs on Disney Junior on weekdays until July 18, will get renewed for a second series.

"If we do more Wildlife Jacks, I'd like to see some more invertebrates - spiders, caterpillars, butterflies. I like the underdogs as well as the big, fluffy and charismatic animals."
