Actress Elaine Stritch, whose gravelly voice and impeccable comic timing made her a theatrical legend, has died.

Stritch, 89, died at home in Birmingham, Michigan today, according to Brigade Marketing..

Although Stritch appeared in films and on television, garnering three Emmys, she was best known for her stage work, particularly in her candid one-woman memoir, Elaine Stritch: At Liberty, and in the Stephen Sondheim musical Company.

She worked well into her late 80s, most recently as Madame Armfeldt in a revival of Sondheim's musical, A Little Night Music. She replaced Angela Lansbury in 2010 to critical acclaim.

Stritch's signature style was wearing a loose fitting white shirt, high heels and sheer black tights.

Tributes poured in to Stritch.

"Elaine was a magnificent woman in every sense of the word ... a true trail blazer. Her talent and spunk will be greatly missed by so many of us," said actress and singer Liza Minnelli.

Actress Mia Farrow, who co-starred with Stritch in September, said: "I suspect Elaine Stritch won't know how to rest in peace! Iconic entertainer, force of nature, my wonderful movie-mom."
