ER star Maura Tierney is to undergo surgery to have a tumour removed from her breast.
The 44-year-old actress, who played Abby Lockhart and was one of the central characters for 10 series, said she was "very optimistic" about the outcome of the operation.
Work on her new TV show Parenthood - based on the Steve Martin film - has been delayed to allow for her treatment.
The actress said in a statement: "I have discovered a tumour in my breast which requires surgery.
"I will not know either my exact diagnosis or course of treatment until that surgery is performed. I'm very optimistic as to the outcome."
As Abby, viewers saw her battle alcoholism, graduate from a role as nurse to an emergency room doctor and become romantically entangled with the show's John Carter and Luka Kovac.
The actress, who was Emmy-nominated for playing Dr Abby Lockhart, has also appeared in films such as Primary Colors and Jim Carrey movie Liar Liar.
