Wire scoops honours at crime awards

The Wire made a killing at the Crime Thriller awards, picking up two prizes including a best actor gong for star Dominic West.

Jonathan Creek star Alan Davies hosted the black carpet event, which celebrates the best works of fiction in the genre by handing out "dagger" awards.

American drama The Wire, which lifts the lid on inner-city drug crime and is screened on BBC2, won the international TV dagger for the best TV crime thriller drama from around the world, as well as earning British actor West the best actor dagger for male star of a crime thriller drama.

Actor Jamie Hector, who also stars in the show, flew in from New York to collect the award on behalf of the actor.

Juliet Stevenson won the best actress dagger for the acclaimed ITV1 drama Place of Execution.

The film dagger for the best big-screen crime thriller story went to Clint Eastwood film Gran Torino, while the TV dagger for the best small-screen crime thriller drama was given to Channel 4's Red Riding.

In recognition of their outstanding careers, writers Colin Dexter, Lynda La Plante, Ian Rankin and Val McDermid were awarded trophies to commemorate their inauguration into the ceremony's Hall of Fame.

The Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards 2009 took place in London and will be screened on ITV3 next Tuesday at 9pm.
