Charlize Theron has revealed the bizarre nickname bestowed on her by former co-star Jeremy Renner.

Apparently the South African actress goes by the name of "Ass-Nuts" when she is in the company of her American friend.

As to the origins of the moniker, Charlize is keeping schtum. All she will reveal is that it stems from a boozy evening.

The 34-year-old actress starred alongside Jeremy in 2005's North Country.

She told E! that the name stuck after the cast went out for a few drinks.

"I can't tell you what transpired, but let me just say I found a friend for life in Jeremy, and he has ever since then referred to me as Ass-Nuts," Charlize said.

She added: "I wish that was a joke, but it's true."
