Daybreak's relaunch with Lorraine Kelly and Aled Jones was seen by 400,000 fewer viewers than tuned in to see the programme make its debut two years ago, overnight figures show.
The programme drew an average audience of 600,000 when it was given its revamp on Monday, compared with the one million who were drawn to the programme's birth in 2010 with presenters Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley.
Chiles and Bleakley were axed in December of last year after they failed to prove enough of a draw and audiences slipped away.
The ITV1 breakfast programme has been given a makeover with its two new hosts in a bid to boost the viewing figures. However, the relaunch on Monday still drew fewer fans than would often tune in to GMTV, which Daybreak was brought in to replace two years ago.
Since Chiles and Bleakley bowed out, the programme has been in the hands of Dan Lobb and Kate Garraway. The show drew just 350,000 viewers on the Monday prior to its relaunch.
Also on the Daybreak presenting team are Ranvir Singh and Matt Barbet.
ITV remained upbeat about the debut audience. A spokeswoman said: "We were very pleased with how the first day of the new Daybreak went yesterday, and we look forward to building on this with more from Ranvir and Matt, and Lorraine and Aled."
