Katie Holmes has revealed she would like to direct a movie.

The former Dawson's Creek star - who filed for divorce from husband Tom Cruise in June after almost five years of marriage - told Women's Wear Daily that she is trying to challenge herself by tackling new things and being at the helm of a film is on her list of ambitions.

"I executive-produced a film called The Romantics, and I do have interest in producing and directing in a few years," she said.

Katie, who has a six-year-old daughter, Suri, with Tom, revealed she wants to try new things everyday without "being afraid to fail".

"Who cares?" she said. "At least you tried. It's usually the people who haven't tried who are the naysayers."

The actress is getting ready to star on Broadway in the comedy Dead Accounts, for which she postponed a movie to work on, and she admitted the theatre is very different to working in film.

"I think both film and stage are so challenging, but in different ways. With film, yeah, you have another take, but a lot of the time you're losing the light, so you better nail it on that take. I haven't found any part of acting to be easy," she said.

The 33-year-old actress, who has been in the spotlight following her split from Tom, also opened up about the attention she gets from the paparazzi, but only to say that she has "a lot of feelings about the press".

"There are a lot of people with much bigger problems and who are less fortunate. I try to keep it all in perspective," she added.
