Ray Winstone has revealed that he relished the opportunity to do his own action sequences in The Sweeney.
The 55-year-old got to brandish guns, chase cars and swap blows in his role as Detective Inspector Jack Regan, even if he ended up breaking a rib or two.
"Playing with guns, you revert to being a little boy, although guns are not toys," he said.
He admitted he didn't expect to be tackling such physical challenges at this stage in his career.
"You start to get to the wrong side of 50 and think, 'Maybe I just want to do love scenes now'. But when you've got to the end of the day and you're aching, out of breath and you've been roughing and tumbling all over the place, you actually feel pretty proud of yourself," he said.
"I didn't think I would be doing that any more at my age. It gives me a buzz to know that physically I can still attempt to do it, and it gives me that urge to do some training and keep myself in that frame of mind physically and mentally."
Ben Drew (aka rapper Plan B), Damian Lewis and Hayley Atwell also star in Nick Love's big screen adaptation of the cult Seventies TV series, which is in cinemas now.
