Josh Radnor has revealed that he is ready to say goodbye to his How I Met Your Mother alter-ego.

With the eighth series of How I Met Your Mother returning on US screens, and the ninth still up in the air, the actor-director, who has played unlucky-in-love architect Ted Mosby for seven years since 2005, hopes the finale will be "satisfying".

"I think we'd be OK with that. If it's the final season, I hope that it resolves itself in a way that the people who have been following this journey over these years will find it satisfying," he said.

"I have been living with this character for a long time, and I have this protective feeling about him. He's been through it, so I hope it's everything he's dreamed of."

While Josh, who stars in Liberal Arts which he directed and wrote, is ready to move on from the character, he is all too aware that playing Ted is "a huge blessing".

"I've gotten all the benefits from TV and it has helped me so much and it's done so many wonderful things for me," he explained.

"It's glib to say that I can walk away from it, but I've done eight years on a TV show that not many people get to do."

:: Liberal Arts opens in cinemas on October 5.
