Sailor's body found in sea cove
The body of a sailor whose yacht was found washed ashore off the French coast has been found in a sea cove in Devon.
Geoffrey Cole, 61, from Weymouth, Dorset, set sail from the town on the morning of Saturday September 21 bound for Swanage in his vessel Palamina, but never arrived.
Police said the journey Mr Cole was planning was one he had done numerous times before.
On the morning of September 23, the French coastguard found Mr Cole's 27ft boat washed ashore in the area of Griz Nez, near Calais and Boulogne, with no one aboard.
A spokesman for Dorset Police said a man's body was found yesterday in a sea cove just off Exmouth.
He added: "The male has been positively identified as the missing Dorset man Geoffrey Cole, who was last seen in September sailing his boat off the Dorset coast.
"The next of kin have been informed and asked for their privacy to be respected at this most difficult time.
"Dorset Police would like to thank the public and the various maritime agencies for their assistance in tracing Mr Cole."
After his disappearance, Mr Cole's daughter Sam told the Bournemouth Echo that she feared the worst.
''He adored sailing and it's my belief that he has passed away doing something he absolutely adored,'' she said.
''It was a journey he did many a time. It must have been something very sudden and immediate.''
