Banksy works going under the hammer
A Banksy print showing people in an auction room bidding for a work with the words I Can't Believe You Morons Actually Buy This Shit on it is expected to sell for a five-figure sum after it goes on show next week.
Morons, which is valued at around £10,000, i s one of more than 70 works by the secretive street artist going on display in London at a selling exhibition organised by auction house Sotheby's and his former agent Steve Lazarides.
Other works in the show, where prices range from £4,000 to more than £500,000, include Pest Control - Banksus Militus Vandalus.
The work - a stuffed rat with a spray can and the words Our Time Will Come painted on a wall - was secretly installed in the Natural History Museum in 2004 where it stayed for two hours until staff spotted it and took it down.
The show is being held at Sotheby's S/2 gallery, which runs from June 11 to July 25, is one of the biggest ever shows of work by the anonymous graffiti artists ever staged.
Gallery director Fru Tholstrup said: " Banksy is more than just a street artist - he is a true cultural phenomenon of our time. Although we all feel we know the images he's produced over the years, there's hardly ever been an opportunity to see together the full range of his best-known works. We're also thrilled to be working with Steve Lazarides, the man who saw and cultivated this remarkable artist from the very beginning."
Earlier this year, one of the artist's most famous works sold at auction in the US after being removed from the wall of a Brighton pub.
Kissing Coppers, a life-size black and white graffiti work of two policemen kissing, was sold to an anonymous buyer in Miami for for 575,000 dollars (£345,000).
