Doctor Who's return next month is to materialise in cinemas around the world to coincide with its screening on BBC1.

The first feature-length edition of the new series, called Deep Breath, will be beamed into screens around the globe from August 23 to allow fans to share the moment as Peter Capaldi takes on the role of The Doctor.

It follows international cinema performances at 1,500 venues last year for the 50th anniversary edition of the show, which proved a huge box office draw for BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the corporation.

The programme's executive producer Steven Moffat said: "Last November The Doctor didn't just conquer the world on television, he did it in the cinemas too. And like the show-off he is, he can't resist another go - one taste of the silver screen is never enough.

"On August 23, the new Doctor will begin his new adventures on BBC1 and in cinemas all over the world. Movie-land beware - Capaldi is coming to get you."

The first episode of the series will be set in Victorian London and will feature familiar characters Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart) and Strax (Dan Starkey), in addition to Jenna Coleman as The Doctor's sidekick Clara Oswald.

Further details about the participating cinemas for the screenings organised by Worldwide will be announced at a later date with more information at www.doctorwho.tv/watch/cinema. Those in the US and Canada will take place from August 25.
