More than one million homes and businesses have superfast broadband, figures show.

The Government aims to have broadband across 95% of the UK by 2017, and said its £1.7 billion investment is "firmly on track" to achieve that target.

Coverage in the UK is highest of the top five economies in Europe, the Government said, adding that by 2024 it expects current investments to boost rural economies by around £9 million every day.

The most remote areas of the UK are now the Government's target, it said, with findings from eight pilot locations which have had an investment of £10 million, due to inform how internet service in those regions can be improved.

Culture Secretary Sajid Javid said access to superfast broadband is transforming the way Britons live and work.

"You can download feature length films faster, chatting online with family and friends around the world using VOIP is more reliable and households can go online simultaneously without the connection slowing down or dropping out," he said.

"For businesses, superfast speeds are boosting profits through increased sales, reduced overheads and accessing markets abroad for the first time."

It is estimated improvements to broadband could create a further 56,000 jobs in the UK by 2024.

Wales Office Minister Alun Cairns said the fact that almost 200,000 Welsh homes and businesses have superfast broadband is "a significant milestone".

" From our rural heartlands to our urban city centres, we are investing in superfast broadband to support Welsh businesses so they can compete in the global race, access new markets and create the jobs we need," said Mr Cairns.
