The UK has been hit with nearly its entire average rainfall for August in just the first half of the month, according to the Met Office.

Figures up to August 13 show t here has been 86.1mm (3.4ins) of rain so far as the remnants of Hurricane Bertha swept across the country.

This is just short of the 89.5mm (3.5ins) monthly average .

In terms of individual countries, Scotland has already been lashed with more rain (121.4mm) than its average for August (116.7mm).

The Inverness and Moray areas have been particularly wet and suffered significant flooding at the start of the week.

Rainfall for England and Northern Ireland so far is just under the full-month average.

Wales has been drier by comparison, seeing 83.2mm of rain making up 77% of its average.

The UK mean temperature has been 15.2C (59F), which is 0.3C above the monthly average, while sunshine levels are just over what we would normally expect with 77.8 hours.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms, particularly over London, caused damage and disruption last night.

London Fire Brigade (LFB), which described the downfall as "biblical", was called to around 20 flood-related incidents in just over an hour yesterday.

One person was rescued from a flooded basement flat in Forest Hill, south London.

Paul Knightley, a spokesman for weather forecasting service MeteoGroup, said the weather front shifted towards the continent early this morning.

"Today there will be some thundery showers, mainly from the Yorkshire area to East Anglia, but not as heavy as yesterday," he said.

"Saturday looks like a fine day but Sunday will be windy, with gusts of up to 50mph in some places."

Next week is expected to be drier but northerly winds bringing in cooler air will make it feel colder than recent days, especially at night.
