Family sitcom bags trio of awards

Family sitcom Outnumbered bagged a trio of gongs at the British Comedy Awards.

The BBC One comedy, starring Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner, won best sitcom, best female newcomer for its child star Romona Marquez and the overall best comedy prize.

But it was also another good night for Harry Hill who picked up best entertainment programme for his TV Burp for the third time in four years and reclaimed the best personality award he last won in 2006.

Michael McIntyre and Alan Carr had both been tipped for success with three nominations each. But on the night McIntyre only picked up the award for best stand up and Carr left empty handed.

Veteran broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan, who retired from his long-running Radio 2 breakfast show this month, was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling presented an outstanding contribution to comedy award to Bolton-born funny man Peter Kay who recently topped the singles charts with a Children In Need charity record.

BBC 2's dark comedy Psychoville scooped the best new TV comedy gong and Have I Got News For You picked up the award for best panel show. BBC 3's sit com Pulling, about three hard-drinking thirtysomething women, might have been axed after its second series but the one-off finale won best comedy drama.

Griff Rhys Jones presented Graham Linehan with the comedy writers award for penning shows such as Father Ted and Black Books.

And it was success also for Katherine Parkinson, the star of Linehan's the IT Crowd, who picked up best comedy actress. Simon Bird got best comedy actor for his work in E4's The Inbetweeners.

British political comedy In the Loop beat Sacha Baron Cohen's camp Austrian fashion reporter Bruno for the best comedy film and Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse picked up their first British Comedy Award in over 10 years for their sketch show Harry and Paul. Charlie Brooker was handed the best newcomer gong by boxer Joe Calzaghe for his E4 show You Have Been Watching.
