Olympic and US Open champion Andy Murray is set to make an "emotional" return to his home town to thank fans for their support.

The 25-year-old will visit Dunblane near Stirling to celebrate his golden summer of success with local people.

The tennis player returned to the UK on Wednesday after beating Novak Djokovic to win the US Open. His victory came weeks after he beat Roger Federer to take the Olympic men's title at the London 2012 Games.

He said: "I can't wait to get back to Dunblane to where it all began and share my US Open victory with everyone and thank them for all the support. It's definitely going to be emotional, but it's a very special place for me."

Fans in Dunblane have continually backed Murray in his search for a grand slam title and regularly gather in pubs and clubs in the town to watch important matches.

A crowd of around 80 supporters packed into the Dunblane Hotel to watch his thrilling five-set US Open triumph in the early hours of Tuesday, celebrating and commiserating every point won and lost.

After his victory champagne was sprayed in the bar and fan Dave Whitton said: "I'm just so happy for Andy - no tears this time, just complete joy and happiness, which is not only just for him but for the people of Dunblane and the whole of Scotland."

Murray did not attend Friday's official victory parade for Scotland's Olympians and Paralympians in Glasgow, having been advised to take a couple of days of complete rest at home after playing continuously for four months.

The world number three player is expected to arrive in an open-top bus in Dunblane at noon, and then walk through the town past a golden post box painted in his honour towards the Dunblane Sports Club tennis courts where his journey to sporting success began.

His visit to the town is likely to last around three hours.
