England batsman Jonathan Trott is "back to his normal self" and planning to play in Warwickshire's pre-season friendlies, according to Dennis Amiss.

South Africa-born Trott, 32, left the Ashes tour of Australia after one Test over the winter because of a stress-related illness.

But now it seems he is ready to make his return to cricket, starting with a friendly against Gloucestershire on April 1 and 2.

Former England batsman Amiss, who is chairman of Trott's benefit committee at Warwickshire, told the Daily Telegraph: "Jonathan is going back to South Africa for a school reunion and the plan is then for him to come back and train with Warwickshire and to play in their friendly matches.

"We played golf last Friday and had a good chat over a coffee afterwards and he seems to be back to his normal self. He has been seeing the ECB medical people which has been very helpful, he's had a good rest and had a family holiday in America recently which he enjoyed.

"He seems to be in good heart and he's raring to go again. There were things going on at the time he came back from Australia - he moved house just before the tour started for example - but he's very positive about things and looking forward to playing cricket again.

"It's one step at a time for him but he wants to get back into the England side and there's no reason why he can't do that."

England will be closely monitoring the progress of a man who has been among their most consistent performers since making his Test debut back in 2009, scoring 3,763 runs at an average of over 46.

His experience would be welcome in a time of transition for a team who have lost both their coach in Andy Flower as well as arguably their best batsman, Kevin Pietersen.
