England forward Brett Ferres has been given a five-match ban for the tackle that earned him a red card in Huddersfield's Tetley's Challenge Cup defeat by St Helens.

The 27-year-old former Wakefield and Castleford second rower was sent off 64 minutes into the fourth-round tie at the John Smith's Stadium on Sunday for a dangerous tackle on Saints full-back Jonny Lomax.

The Giants were leading 16-8 at the time but went on to lose 17-16.

Ferres was charged by the Rugby Football League's match-review panel with a grade E offence, to which he pleaded guility when he appeared in front of a disciplinary committee on Tuesday evening.

Ferres, an ever-present so far for the Giants in 2014, was also fined £300.
