Greg Rusedski is to coach Britain's brightest young tennis prospect, Kyle Edmund.

The 19-year-old was highly thought of as a junior and has made encouraging progress up the senior rankings under the tutelage of Lawn Tennis Association coach Colin Beecher.

Former US Open finalist Rusedski, who also works for the LTA, takes over with Edmund ranked 292nd.

The pair previously worked together when Rusedski was captain of Britain's junior Davis Cup team.

Edmund has already been called up for the senior Davis Cup side having made the initial line-up for February's match against the USA, although James Ward was subsequently preferred for the second singles spot alongside Andy Murray.

Murray is another of Edmund's admirers, and the teenager trained with the Wimbledon champion in Miami during the off-season.

LTA chief executive Michael Downey welcomed Rusedski's appointment, saying on bbc.co.uk: "I think this is great that this has happened. No disrespect to Colin Beecher, who did great work, but change sometimes should happen.

"I think it reflects very highly that not only did Kyle look for a change but that Greg wanted to step up and take on this challenge. Greg has stepped over the line, and said 'give me the keys'."

Edmund has played a lot of his tennis on clay and, having come through qualifying, beat fourth seed Aljaz Bedene in the first round of this week's Challenger tournament in Vercelli, Italy on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old, from Beverley in Yorkshire, won his first ATP Tour level match at Eastbourne last season with victory over France's Kenny De Schepper.

Edmund has won five titles on the Futures tour, the lowest level of professional tennis.
