Bird scarers frighten dog
6:00am Thursday 17th January 2013 in Salisbury Letters
SINCE last November, my dog has lived in fear of loud noises, starting with fireworks lasting for two weeks.
Pheasant shooting will last until the end of February, and then there are the bird scarers in the fields where we have a beautiful public walk to Stratford-sub- Castle. The bird scarers have been firing since November in the fields alongside the public walkway.
I can understand it when the feeds are sown, but now when the crops are about five inches tall; birds will not bother with them.
As soon as my dog hears a crop scarer, which is the same sound as a gunshot, the walk is over.
I took her to the vet and she’s been put on tranquillisers, but there’s no guarantee they’ll work. I’ve seen a variety of dogs trembling because of the noise.
Please can the farmers look again and if it’s not necessary, please can you stop bird scaring and give us our lives back? We just want to enjoy dog walking again.

As it seems that a lot of Farmers lack the common decency or intelligence to site them, at the very least, away from public rights of way, bridle paths etc.
Here are the instructions:

They are meant to scare pigeons away that would be eating the young shoots of oilseed rape, but merely just scare (move) them to another field.
The Farmers should adhere to the NFU bird scarers code, which is available from the NFU.
