AS the person most affected by the roadworks at Dinton, the subject of a letter from Gordon Heath (Postbag, April 4), I would like to set the record straight.

This scheme has taken three years to come to fruition and is the result of research into traffic speed and bad driving. Before the roadworks started there was a pedestrian refuge in the centre of the road with a keep left arrow on it. This was totally ignored by many drivers.

It was proven that over one three-week period in June 2011, 105 vehicles chose to ignore the keep left sign while overtaking at high speed. One motorcycle was clocked at 96mph on the wrong side of the road and this area is within a 30mph speed limit.

It was going to be only a matter of time before a major accident occurred. In consultation with the parish council, Wiltshire Council agreed the scheme currently being implemented.

There is no pinch point being installed. The road is being realigned and road marking removed to encourage speeding traffic to go slower.

While the Community Speed Watch team is fairly effective, and I am a member, we cannot be on duty 24 hours a day so we cannot stop dangerous drivers who ignore the law.

If Gordon Heath is interested in what is happening, he can attend parish council meetings.
