Like many others, I've been watching and enjoying the Winter Olympics, even more so since we experienced 2012 at the Olympic Park for ourselves.

Watching the jumps and rides in the slopestyle and the halfpipe, along with ski jumping has all been breathtaking.

While here in Salisbury I was saddened to find four young men on Thursday afternoon practicing their jumps and tricks across the end of our war memorial in the newly paved Guildhall Square.

I decided to speak to one to enquire if he knew what it was he was using for his rides.

After consideration he thought it might be a memorial of some sort, but while he respected my reasoning for objecting to his group abusing the kerbing surrounding the War Memorial, he was cross that the council, had spent money on the Market Place and Guildhall Square, and not repaired the skateboard park.

He did not consider board riding on public seating might be the reason for the unusual design of the new benches in the square, as it did no damage in his opinion.

Nor was jumping on the kerbing going to cause damage to the memorial.

I left as I had an appointment, but do hope this boy and his friends might reconsider where they practice next.
