WILTSHIRE Council’s contractors are busy repairing roads with infill material and next winter, no doubt, and particularly on our rural roads they will do the job all over again.
At the end of the 1950s the Germans realised that they were wasting resources with repetitive repairs.
They standardised rural road widths – which is safer and practical - and built proper edges, usually with shallow kerbs to control water flows.
The level surfaces makes for smoother roads without big puddles which are guaranteed to break up along the road edges every year.
I wonder if Wiltshire’s big road improvement plan will go that far? So many roads here in south Wiltshire are heavily used by commuters and others trying to avoid Salisbury city and they deserve better. So do the affected villages.
