YOU will probably have noticed that all the way along the London Road and the A30 the council are replacing, not only the road signs, but the posts that support them.

In many cases, the new signs are identical to those being replaced and the new steel posts are positioned about one foot behind the sign being replaced.

A typical example is a 30mph sign mounted on two steel posts replacing a new 30mph sign on two steel posts.

How can this be justified when the roads concerned are still full of pot holes after last winter’s weather?

Please don’t tell me its an EU directive or the money comes from a different budget!

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “This improvement work has been carried out using funding from central government which is specifically allocated for new highway infrastructure and safety schemes.

"The road markings and signs have been replaced, and a substantial amount of foliage has been removed to aid visibility and provide clear information to motorists on this route.

“Many of the signs and their posts were beginning to rot and were due for replacement."
